From January to December 2021, the electricity consumption of the whole society increased rapidly year-on-year, and the electricity consumption of the whole society in all provinces achieved positive growth. The growth rate of the electricity consumption in the country’s 18 provinces exceeded the national average level. The electricity consumption of industrial and manufacturing sector kept a stable growth. In the manufacturing industries, the growth rate of the electricity consumption in high-tech and equipment manufacturing industries maintained a leading position.
1. Overall electricity consumption
From January to December, the electricity consumption of the whole society reached 8,312.8TWh, a year-on-year increase of 10.3% and an average increase of 7.1% in the two years.
By sectors, from January to December, the electricity consumption of the primary industry was 102.3TWh, a year-on-year increase of 16.4%; the electricity consumption of the secondary industry was 5,613.1TWh, a year-on-year increase of 9.1%. The electricity consumption of the tertiary industry was 1,423.1TWh, a year-on-year increase of 17.8% and that of residential was 1,174.3TWh, a year-on-year increase of 7.3%.

2. Electricity consumption by region
From January to December, the electricity consumption of the Eastern, Central, Western and Northeastern China was 3,936.6TWh, 1,545.9TWh, 2,379.5TWh and 450.8TWh respectively, the growth rate of each region was 11.0%, 11.5%, 9.4% and 6.2% respectively.

From January to December, the growth rate of the electricity consumption in country’s 18 provinces exceeded the national average level, namely: Tibet (22.6%), Qinghai (15.6%), Hubei (15.3%), Jiangxi (14.5%), Sichuan (14.3%), Fujian (14.2%), Zhejiang (14.2%), Guangdong (13.6%), Chongqing (13.0%), Shannxi (12.9%), Anhui (11.9%), Hainan (11.8%), Hunan (11.7%), Ningxia (11.6%), Jiangsu (11.4%), Shanxi (11.4%), Shanghai (11.0%) and Xinjiang (10.8%).
3. Electricity consumption in industrial and manufacturing sector
From January to December, the industrial electricity consumption nationwide reached 5,509.0TWh, a year-on-year increase of 9.1%, 6.4 percentage points higher than the growth of the same period of last year, accounting for 66.3% of the overall electricity consumption.
From January to December, the electricity consumption of the manufacturing industry was 4,177.8TWh, a year-on-year increase of 9.9%, 6.8 percentage points higher compared to the growth of same period of the previous year. Among them, the electricity consumption of the four energy-intensive industries totaled at 2,267.1TWh, increased by 6.4% year-on-year, with the growth rate raised by 2.4 percentage points from the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of the high-tech and equipment manufacturing industry was 891.2TWh, an increase of 15.7% year-on-year, 11.7 percentage points higher compared with the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of consumer goods manufacturing industry was 560.6TWh, an increase of 12.6% year-on-year, 14.4 percentage points higher than the previous year. The electricity consumption in other manufacturing industries was 458.9TWh, a year-on-year increase of 13.9%, grew by 10.5 percentage points compared to the previous year.
4. Electricity consumption in energy-intensive industries
From January to December, the electricity consumption of the chemical industry was 509.7TWh, an increase of 6.9% year-on-year, and the growth rate raised by 4.5 percentage points from the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of the building materials industry was 421.1TWh, increased by 7.4% year-on-year, 3.7 percentage points higher over the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of the ferrous metal smelting and refining industry was 636.1TWh, an increase of 6.7% year-on-year, which was 2.8 percentage points higher than the same period of the previous year. The electricity consumption of non-ferrous metal smelting and refining industry was 700.2TWh, grew by 5.4%, and the growth rate dropped 0.1 percentage points compared to the same period of the previous year.
