CTG-backed Meerwind wind farm sets new electricity generation record

Meerwind, an offshore wind farm majority owned by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), generated 1.282 billion kWh of electricity in 2020, setting a record annual power production since its operation, the company said.

Meerwind offshore wind farm, which was put into operation in February 2015, is a 288 MW project located in the German Bight in the North Sea. The project is the first offshore wind farm in Germany to have received full certification from DNV GL and the world's first offshore wind power project to have obtained investment-grade credit rating.

Meerwind achieved a multi-year average annual electricity generation of 1.21 billion kWh and multi-year average annual power sales of 1.191 kWh between 2015 and 2019. The wind farm, which maintained safe and stable operation in 2020 despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, sold 1.261 billion kWh of electricity in 2020, delivering 4,451 hours of equivalent full-load power generation with an average availability of wind turbines up to 98.03 percent.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Meerwind has learned the lessons and experiences from China’s fight against the pandemic through China Three Gorges (Europe), which has provided recommendations and instructions for its pandemic control and prevention efforts. Meerwind was one of the first businesses in Germany to take strict prevention and control measures, enabling the company to report zero infection among its employees while setting a new electricity generator record.

Meerwind offshore wind farm has won industry-wide recognition for its outstanding performance and professional expertise shown by its management team. An independent third-party evaluation jointly conducted by the renowned consulting group Arup and Wood Group in 2020 concluded that Meerwind’s capabilities in offshore wind farm operation and maintenance has surpassed most of its peers in Europe.
