On October 13, China Longyuan Power Group Corporation Ltd. (hereinafter “Longyuan Power”), a subsidiary of China Energy, released its “Report on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in South Africa” (hereinafter the “Report”) at the CSR report release event sponsored by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) for centrally administered state-owned enterprises. Meanwhile, the Longyuan De Aar wind power project in South Africa was included into the bluebook “Research Report on Overseas Social Responsibility of Central Enterprises (2020)” as a best practice case study on CSR performance due to its contribution to the fight against COVID-19 as a responsible Chinese company in the African country.
Longyuan Power releases its “Report on CSR in South Africa.”
The Report shows that Longyuan Power has been engaged in green power development in South Africa for 10 years since it launched a wind power survey in the country in 2009. In November 2017, the Longyuan De Aar wind power project in South Africa began to generate electricity. Relying on the country’s unique resource endowments, the company gives full play to its industrial and technical advantages and has blazed a path of energy cooperation featuring a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. Construction of the project created more than 700 job opportunities for locals, and since it was put into operation, the project offers over 100 long-term jobs each year. Moreover, the company adheres to the principles of “putting overseas safety first and prioritizing precaution and integrated management” and fully leverages its professional advantage in the field of wind power. Through strict rules-based operation according to law and careful prevention and control of various risks, it has perfectly completed the pre-development, construction and operation of the project. By 2019, the project had supplied a total of 1.69 billion kWh of clean electricity for locals.

In addition, Longyuan Power has actively fulfilled its social responsibility, playing a positive role in areas like local employment, community welfare, and livelihood improvement. The company launched an educational support program to help local students chase their dreams. It annually allots 4 million rand to support 40 outstanding local black college students. Moreover, the company established four early education centers in the local community, benefiting over 320 local children in need. It also established a community fund for targeted poverty alleviation and annually provides more than 1 million rand to support local senior care centers, local non-profit organizations and local disabled persons. By 2019, the company had accumulatively provided about 28 million rand to support public welfare activities, earning high praise from the local government, communities, hospitals and partners. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Longyuan Power worked with the South African government, hospitals and communities to go through thick and thin and jointly build a “red defense line” against the coronavirus in the country. The effort won great praise from the Chinese Consulate General in Cape Town and the governor of South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, and was included into the bluebook “Research Report on Overseas Social Responsibility of Central Enterprises (2020)” as a best practice case study on overseas CSR performance.
It is reported that more than 300 representatives from 97 centrally administered enterprises, local state-owned enterprises, and mainstream media organizations attended the CSR report release ceremony for centrally administered enterprises. The “Blue Book on CRS of Central Enterprises (2020),” the bluebook “Research Report on Overseas Social Responsibility of Central Enterprises (2020)” and “Collection of Central Enterprises’ Best Practice Cases of Combating COVID-19.” were unveiled at the event.
