The fourth-generation live working robots for power distribution systems, developed by team of Zhang Liming, a Pioneer of Reform and Model of the Times, commenced its application after the first operation in the Tianjin Binhai New Area. At present, three models of robots, one with dual-arm autonomy, another with a single arm capable of man-machine collaboration, and still another with single-arm autonomy, have been successfully developed and applied to the distribution network. Such application effectively mitigates safety risks and guarantees the safe and stable operation of the power grid.
The R&D of the robots is a key part of State Grid’s efforts to follow up on President Xi Jinping’s important instructions. On January 17 of 2019, at the Tianjin Binhai-Zhong Guan Cun Innovation Exhibition Center, President Xi watched the demonstration of the second-generation robot, He encouraged Zhang Liming and other R&D staff to seek real knowledge from practice and engage in innovation with no distraction. In line with the instructions, State Grid pooled strengths from its Department of Affiliates Development, Department of Equipment Management, Department of Science & Technology, as well as the Tianjin Electric Power Company and NARI Group, to conduct joint R&D of the robot series.
Tackling key R&D obstacles, the robot series has envolved through four generations. Its core technologies included 3D environment reconstruction, visual recognition, and motion control. It pioneered the application of a multi-sensor fusion positioning system to identify and position wires. Through deep learning, an algorithm of route-planning for the dual-arm robot has been developed; an end effector was also developed for the live robot. These enabled the robot to automatically identify the position of the wire, cut the insulation layer and finish the connection. Thus, the robot could effectively eliminate risks of personal safety related to manual live operations, substantially reduce labor and enhance performance.
The fourth-generation robot adopts a modular design, which is two thirds smaller in size and one third lighter in weight than the previous generation. It has made major breakthroughs in reducing weight and size, and is able to work in complex terrain and narrow space. Thus it has further expanded its scope of application in distribution networks.
At present, the robot series has applied for 36 patents, and 6 utility model patents have been granted. The robot has successfully completed more than 80 operations in urban, suburb, and mountain areas in Tianjin. It is being rolled out in many provinces and cities. The robot base in Tianjin has an annual output capacity of 200 units, and a holistic industrial chain covering R&D, manufacturing, sales and service.
Acting on the idea of R&D, piloting, promotion and reserve in batches, State Grid Tianjin will redouble efforts to further the innovation and application of AI technologies in the energy sector. It is committed to uplifting the performance of smart grid operation and maintenance, and contributing to State Grid’s drive for building a world-leading energy internet enterprise with Chinese characteristics.
