China-South Africa Nuclear Power Cooperation Seminar Successfully Concluded

China-South Africa Nuclear Power Cooperation Seminar, co-sponsored by State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC), China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) and South Africa Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA),was successfully closed on February 26, 2014 in Johannasberg, South Africa.

Themed on nuclear power development program, nuclear power technology development and nuclear industrial chain in China and South Africa, this seminar featured the analysis of nuclear power development policy and safety regulation , the sharing of experiences of nuclear power project construction and equipment manufacturing ,and the discussion of nuclear power industry development prospect and cooperative opportunities between the two countries, creating a platform for strengthening the cooperation between governments ,energy regulators ,research institutes and enterprises of two countries.

As the first nuclear energy cooperation gala co-hosted by enterprises of China and South Africa, this seminar attracted one hundred and twenty high level representatives and industry insiders to attend, respectively coming from governments, enterprises, and institutes of financing, law and research of the two countries.
February 25 and February 26, named as South Africa Nuclear Power Day and China Nuclear Power Day respectively, witnessed the special introduction on nuclear power development of both countries.

On South Africa Nuclear Power Day, Department of Energy, Department of Trade and Industry, and nuclear safety regulators of South Africa introduced nuclear energy development program, localization requirement and safety regulation laws in South Africa; South Africa Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) and South Africa power utility Eskom gave a briefing on nuclear technology reserve, radioactive waste disposal and nuclear siting; and equipment manufacturers, financial institutes and law institutes made excellent presentations as well. Cooperation Agreement on Nuclear Training for South Africa was signed by Chairman Wang Binghua of SNPTC and CEO Tshelane of NECSA on the day.

On China Nuclear Power Day, attendees from National Energy Administration(NEA), National Nuclear Safety Administration(NNSA), SNPTC, CGN, Tsinghua University, Bank of China, China North Nuclear Fuel Co,.Ltd, CFHI, Harbin Electric Corporation, Shanghai Electric, Dongfang Electric performed detailed presentations and had lively discussions on the topics of nuclear development planning, CAP1400 technology, construction experiences of AP1000 Self-reliance Project, Gen III nuclear power industry chain, nuclear equipment manufacturing capabilities, nuclear power educational system and nuclear power project financing capabilities, pushing the seminar to a culmination.

Mr. Chen Fei, Deputy Director General of Department of Nuclear Power Management of NNSA, stated at the closing ceremony that China and South Africa enjoy profound traditional friendship and the two sides shall take immediate actions to make contributions to the nuclear power cooperation and compose nuclear power cooperation new chapter together. The senior manager of NNR Thabo Tselane, expressed his gratitude to China side for the efforts made in hosting this seminar on behalf of South Africa, and stressed that the economic development of South Africa needs the huge electric supply, and nuclear power, as the clean energy, is the first priority. He hoped that China and South Africa could further the cooperation in nuclear power field and implement the actions initiated in the seminar as earliest, and he welcomed Chinese nuclear enterprises to continue conducting communication in South Africa.
