Staff of the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau guide a customer to pay their electrical bill via digital RMB
Shenzhen - Digital RMB payments have been a hot topic recently.
On July 9, Ms. Liu downloaded the “Central Bank Digital RMB” App in the business hall of the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau, clicked on the QR code for digital RMB payment and paid her electricity bill … with a little help from several friendly staff members.
The whole payment process took less than one minute!
“It’s so surprising that I can use digital RMB now. It is really convenient. I am sure to use it frequently,” said Ms. Liu, joyful after learning she was the first customer to her pay bill using the new digital RMB.
To facilitate the payment of electricity bills, customers only have to follow the Central Bank’s digital RMB pilot policy which is in full support of the national financial strategy.
The entire on-line function is expected to better serve customers in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau has launched digital RMB payments in all of Shenzhen’s business halls.
“Digital RMB” is essentially legal tender issued by the People’s Bank of China under the national credit guarantee. It is digital cash completely equivalent to banknotes and coins.
Since April 2020, digital RMB has been used for paying living expenses, catering services, transportation, shopping and government services in Shenzhen, Suzhou, Xiong’an New Area, Chengdu and will be available as a pilot program at the upcoming 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games.
Compared with existing popular third-party payment platforms such as WeChat and Alipay, digital RMB payments are entirely electronic without being restricted by the amount of payment, the number of payments or entrustment to any third party which makes it very safe and more convenient.
