Kunliulong DC Project in Service--22.27 TWh of Electricity Transmitted to the Greater Bay Area
17.66 Million Tons of CO2 Emissions Cut

Guangzhou - During its summary and commendation meeting on September 29, China Southern Power Grid senior managers announced 22.27 TWh of electricity in total has been transmitted to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area through the Kunbei-Liubei-Longmen multi-terminal VSC-UHVDC project as of September 27, reducing 17.66 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
As the “main artery” of the Wudongde Hydropower Station, China’s fourth-largest hydropower project, the Kunliulong DC Project has impressed the world with groundbreaking technological innovations and 19 engineering records since its commissioning providing safe, reliable and stable support which provides a firm foundation of power transmission of the Wudongde Hydropower Station.
“Our innovative fault self-clearing technology can autonomously restore the functions of overhead DC lines in less than half a second if and when they may be  short-circuited by sudden external hits such as a lightning strike. The single power module of VSC-HVDC converter valve allows automatic security isolation should any serious fault occur, ensuring long-term operational reliability and stability,” said Feng Dong, vice president of the Power Generation Technology Department of CSG EHV Power Transmission Company.
In the peak summer months when demand is very high, the Kunliulong DC Project operated several times at full load of 8 million kilowatts, setting single-day transmission record with 192 million kWh; operating when there were cases when lines encountered problems due to lightning strikes.
Thanks to the autonomous fault self-clearing technology, the affected lines were restored in just 400 milliseconds without compromising the stability of voltage and current supply or the overall grid operation.
