CSG International in Joint Research on Offshore Wind Power Project with Companhia de Electricidade de Macau-1
Guishan Offshore Wind Farm, Zhuhai

Macau - On September 16, specialists from both CSG International and Companhia de Electricidade de Macau went to Guishan and Dong’ao islands in Zhuhai for investigations into China Southern Power Grid’s offshore wind power and intelligent microgrids projects.
Companhia de Electricidade de Macau is a private public utility company with a sole concession to transmit, distribute, sell high, medium and low voltage of electricity within the city in Macau.
At the Guishan and Dong’ao islands in Zhuhai, staff learned more about the construction and operation of the projects, gained insights into the energy demand of islands in the estuary of the Pearl River and reviewed detailed planning of offshore wind power projects in the region. Engineers from both sides also discussed varied cooperation opportunities arising from clean power energy projects in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Additionally, senior managers from both China Southern Power Grid and Companhia de Electricidade de Macau agreed to promote more engagements in clean energy between Guangdong and Macao, improve regional power supplies and accelerate power interconnectivity and sustainable development in the Greater Bay Area.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, a critical phase for China’s carbon peak target, developing offshore wind power has become essential for Guangdong to reach peak carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality. To date, it has a total planned installed capacity of 66.85 million kilowatts of offshore wind power, outperforming other provinces and demonstrating promising potentials.
The Guishan Offshore Wind Farm in Zhuhai, the first demonstration project in Guangdong, is scheduled to be completed and put into operation by Year 2021. It is expected to provide 493 GWh of clean electricity per annum and save approximately 160,200 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 382,500 tons, facilitating energy conservation and optimizing power grid and energy structure in the GBA.
On September 5, the Central Committee and the State Council issued a general plan for building up the Guangdong-Macao in-depth cooperation zone in Hengqin, giving impetus to the development of Hengqin through collaboration between Guangdong and Macao. As a fundamental energy source, electricity plays a critical  supporting role in the economic and social development of the Cooperation Zone.
Since providing electrical power supplies to Macao in Year 1984, China Southern Power Grid continues to be committed to ensure a power supply to the region. During Year 2017, CSG and the electricity regulator of Macao SAR signed the Supplementary Agreement on the Electricity Cooperation Framework between Years 2010 to 2020, specifying that Macao's medium and long-range electricity supplies would be mainly provided by CSG.
On behalf of the two sides, as specified in the Agreement, senior managers from both CSG International and Companhia de Electricidade de Macau signed a medium- and long-term electricity trading contract and established a trading mechanism to enhance communication between Guangdong and Macao and ensure smooth electricity transactions.
Currently, China Southern Power Grid transmits electricity to Macao through six 220-kV cables and four 110-kV cables. The accumulated electrical power supply over the past 10 years accounts for more than 80 percent of Macao's total electricity consumption and in Year 2020 particularly, 90 percent of the electricity used in the region was supplied by CSG.
A third power transmission channel, with the construction work within Macao to be completed in mid-Year 2022, will further increase the transmission capacity from 1.1 to 1.7 million kilowatts, ensuring an ever safer and more reliable power supplies to Macao and meeting its medium and long-term power demands.
