Cebu, Philippines - The Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project (MVIP), a ±350 kV DC transmission project that will unify all three power grids of the Philippines, has launched full-scale construction here.
The project, where China Southern Power Grid (CSG) has taken a leading role, is CSG’s first international general contracting project.
The multi-billion RMB project involves the laying of 184 circuit-kilometers of submarine cables to link the Visayas and Mindanao grids.
The MVIP also includes the installation of a total of 526 circuit-kilometers of overhead lines as well as 422 circuit-kilometers of overhead wires.
The Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project is designed to transmit direct current across the South China Sea from the Visayas to Mindanao in the Philippines.
As the power supplies in the Philippines over the past few years has been ineffective in meeting the increasing power demand of this fast growing country and has been hindering the nation’s economy.
Along with frequent power outages and power equipment failures, the project is of great significance to strengthen power reliability and balance energy distribution in the country.
