A Robot Dog Runs the Transformer Substation

Recently, the Foshan Power Supply Bureau of the Guangdong Power Grid let a newly-developed four-legged robot, nicknamed “Robot Dog”, off its proverbial “collar” to inspect its 220 kV Zidong transformer substation …marking the first time that a four-legged robot had been used in such highly specialized operations.

Compared with traditional wheeled robots, tracked robots and surveillance cameras, Robot Dog is more flexible, safe and mobile as it can work in different environments, like greensward, gravel path and even the narrow spaces under fixed equipment. It never needs to sleep or eat and can capture visible light and infrared light images from all directions, which will be transmitted as real time data to the monitoring background, enabling workers to check the device status.

In the next stage, Robot Dog will be further upgraded with features such as climbing, connecting with tripod heads or wireless charging. By then, it will be able to cover wider areas in its inspection and popularity.
