CSG Completes the First “Made in China 2025” Demonstration Projects;World’s First Mechanical HVDC Circuit Breaker Now in Operation

Guangzhou - January 20, 2018 - The world’s first mechanical HVDC circuit breaker has been placed into operation in CSG‘s Nan’ao ±160 kV multi-terminal flexible DC Transmission System.

It is not only the first China-made mechanical HVDC circuit breaker used in VSC-HVDC but also is the first ±160 kV mechanical HVDC circuit breaker in the world.

This successful technical advancement marks another milestone for China’s constant innovation in DC transmission.

CSG’s development and demonstration application of key equipment of ±160 kV intelligent energy system has been included in the first “Made in China 2025” demonstration projects.

This project applies the self-developed advanced topology which has helped to solve many technical challenges, including high voltage storage, fast trigger and system control and achieve a quick break within 3.5ms. Cutting faulty circuits as precisely as a scalpel makes the entire DC transmission system more reliable and stable.

The ±160 kV mechanical HVDC circuit breaker is characterized by controllability, reliability and less energy loss. The tightly structured equipment can be placed outdoors; can also be adapted to complex island environment featuring high salinity, high humidity and strong winds.

Covering an area of only 34 square meters, it reduces significantly the cost of power construction, operation and maintenance, contributing to the large-scale development of VSC-HVDC power grid. CSG’s VSC-HVDC technology is a world leader and is of vital importance to China’s ambition to be the market innovator in manufacturing high-end electrical engineering equipment.

Since the launching of the project, CSG has already finished the preliminary joint research, and Guangdong Power Grid has performed demonstration project construction and pilot testing in 2017. These achievements have added a new chapter to “Made in China 2025”.
