Northwest Yunnan UHVDC Power Transmission Project Put into Operation

On May 18, the Northwest Yunnan-Guangdong UHVDC Power Transmission Project, with the highest altitude and the highest anti-seismic level, was placed into operation. It has the transmission volume of approximately 20 TWh of hydro power, accounting for nearly one quarter of Shenzhen’s annual electricity consumption. –

This project not only meets the great demand of electricity for the burgeoning economic development of Southern China but constantly provides clean power for the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.

Yunan Power Grid’s transmission capacity was increased by 5 GW

Spanning as much as 1,953 kilometers, the lines of Northwest Yunnan-Guangdong UHVDC project stretches from Jianchuan County, Dali prefecture of Yunan Province and crosses Yunan, Guizhou, Guangxi and Guangdong. It is the first Shenzhen-bound UHVDC project attached to the West-to-East Power Transmission Project and the third UHVDC channel operated by China Southern Power Grid as the Company carries out the West-to-East Power Transmission Project.

In late December of last year, this project, with bi-polar low-endl operation, began delivering clean hydro-power to the load centers of the Pearl River Delta.

This project, now in full operation, has an incremental 5GW capacity for power transmission from western to eastern China as every year some 20 TWh of hydro power is being consumed.

The project can yield positive results: the consumption of standard coal can be reduced by six million tons and CO2 emission can be cut by 16 million tons, the impact of which is equivalent to planting 16 million hectares of new trees.
