China’s First Research Center for Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission to Emerge in Shanghai

On December 2, 2008, China Huaneng Group and Shanghai Electric (Group) Corporation sighed the “Agreement for Cooperation in Establishing the Huaneng Shanghai Electric Research Center for Reduction of Emitted Greenhouse Gases” in Shanghai.

Under the agreement, China Huaneng Group and Shanghai Electric will team up in setting up the Center,which will research the technologies for emission reduction and efficient utilization of energy and will carry out the development, transformation and promotion of high technologies in the field of energy saving and emission reduction according to relevant state requirements. It will use 2 coal-fired units of 600MW of Huaneng Shanghai Shidongkou Plant No. 2 as a pilot project dedicated to reducing the carbon dioxide emission of coal-fired generation units.

The signing of the agreement is a concrete realization of the efforts made to implement the national strategy of keeping on the road of sustainable development and augment the capability of addressing climate changes; to provide the platform and support for technological researches for China to master the core technology of reducing CO2 emission, lead the future development of coal and electricity, enhance the capability for the independent innovation in related technologies; It has positive significance for the sustainable development of China’s coal-fired power industry and construction of a society that is resource-saving and environmentally-friendly.

Earlier, in July this year, China Huaneng Group put into operation China’s first demonstration project for carbon capture from flue gas of coal-fired power plant in Beijing Co-generation Power Plant, which can process 3000 tons of CO2 each year.
