Hu Jianmin met with U.S. Special Envoy for Climate Change

On May 4, Hu Jianmin, Vice President of China Huaneng Group, met with Todd Stern, U.S. Special Envoy for Climate Change and his delegation. Both parties exchanged opinions on issues of common concern, such as closer cooperation and better responding to climate change.

Hu Jianmin introduced China Huaneng Group’s clean development. He said, China Huaneng Group always attached great importance to the clean development of coal-fired power generation and the development of low carbon power technology. To actively deal with climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emission is not only the social responsibility of China Huaneng Group, but also meets the company’s needs for better development. In recent years, China Huaneng Group has actively applied advanced power generation technology and equipments, largely conducted technical retrofit on existing units, and researched and developed clean technologies such as CCS and IGCC etc. The company also vigorously developed clean energy such as hydropower, wind power, nuclear power, gas-fired power generation, etc., and extensively promoted international cooperation on technological development, especially with U.S companies and research organizations including American Electric Power, and Duke Energy. China Huaneng Group is willing to work with American partners to work on new challenges in the energy area, and to make greater contributions to combating climate change and ensuring energy security.

Todd Stem briefly introduced the U.S. standpoint and policy on climate change. He said, the U.S. government has been attaching great importance to dealing with climate change, and has worked out new environmental policies lately to limit the emissions of greenhouse gases from coal-fired power plants. Todd Stem hoped that the U.S. and China would continue to maintain long-term and close cooperation on clean technology development.
