Dr. SHU Yinbiao Attends the 2021 Purple Mountain Forum and Delivers Keynote Report

On August 14, Dr. SHU Yinbiao, Chairman of China Huaneng Group, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of IEC and  President of CSEE, attended the 2021 International Top-Level Forum on Engineering Science and Technology Development Strategy and the 6th Purple Mountain Forum via video link and delivered a keynote report on Research on Technical Pathway and Practice towards Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality.
Dr. SHU expressed his views on researches on carbon peak and carbon neutrality in China's power industry, key technical pathways to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals, the technical basis of low-carbon industry and China Huaneng's practical explorations. Dr. SHU believes that to achieve the goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, the main battlefield lies in energy with electricity as the main force, which will arouse a broad, profound and systematic economic and social reform. Although facing severe challenges, we should be full of confidence.
Dr. SHU pointed out that key technical pathways towards carbon peak and carbon neutrality shall take decarbonization, electrification, digitization and standardization as the direction, and strengthen the “Two Supports”, namely science and technology innovation support and policy mechanism support to build a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system.
We need to increase our investment on clean energy construction, improving the electrification level of areas including industrial, construction and transportation industries, and carry out digitized reform and construction. Set up carbon standardization system and promote international standardization collaborations to underpin the upgrading of our low-carbon technologies, products, services and industries.
As for the “Two Supports”, we need to converge advanced scientific researches, accelerating breakthroughs in key technologies of off-shore wind power, PV power and nuclear power, and actively create policy systems for realizing carbon peak and carbon neutrality to drive the R&D and application of low-carbon technologies and reduce costs of low-carbon transition for the whole society.
Dr. SHU emphasized that accelerating the building of a new power system with renewable energy as the mainstay shall follow the principles of safe, premium, economic and efficient development and under the premise of ensuring reliable supply of energy and electricity, aiming at achieving zero carbon emission. The power industry shall not only realize clean substitution from fossil energy on the energy production side, but also implement electricity substitution on the energy consumption side, undertaking energy consumption and carbon emission transferred from areas including industrial, construction and transportation industries and serving the carbon reduction and decarbonization of the whole society.
The Forum was hosted by Chinese Academy of Engineering and themed Power System Actively Supports the Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Goals. Eleven experts specialized in energy and electricity sector delivered keynote reports on the forum, including Academicians from Chinese Academy of Engineering: Qiu Aici, Ma Yongsheng, Luo An, and Xue Yusheng; and Academicians from the US National Academy of Engineering: Damir Novesel, Marija D.Ilic, Kaushik Rajashekara, Chen Guoping, and Zheng Yuping, etc.
