Dr. SHU Yinbiao attends China-UK Engineering Technology Green and Low-Carbon Development Forum
On April 24, Dr. SHU Yinbiao, Chairman of China Huaneng Group, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of IEC attended the China-UK Engineering Technology Green and Low-Carbon Development Forum via video link and delivered a keynote report on Research on Pathway towards Carbon Peak and Carbon neutrality of China’s Power Industry.
The forum was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Royal Academy of Engineering of the UK. WANG Zhigang, Minister of Science and Technology, LI Xiaohong, President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Sir Jim MacDonald, President of Royal Academy of Engineering delivered speeches. PAN Jiahua, member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Dean of the Institute of Ecological Civilization of Beijing University of Technology and other experts made keynote reports.
Dr. SHU Yinbiao pointed out that China is the world’s largest energy producer and consumer and strives to reach the peak of carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The time span from carbon peak to carbon neutrality is by far shorter than that of developed countries. Power industry shoulders an important historical mission. In recent years, China has realized rapid development of renewable energy and the large-scale development and utilization of clean energy. Fruitful results have been seen in power science and technology innovation. China has vigorously promoted electricity substitute in place of other energy forms, continued to deepen energy system reform, and has gained remarkable achievements in low-carbon power transition.
Dr. SHU Yinbiao believes that according to various energy endowment conditions, China’s carbon peak and carbon neutrality pathway can be divided into three phases: continuous growth of electricity demand, gradual slowdown of demand growth and zero-carbon power system. He proposes that China shall vigorously implement re-electrification, and build a new power system featuring diversified and clean energy supply with renewable energy as the main body and with the direction of decarbonization, electrification, digitalization and standardization, and that China shall raise the level of end-use electrification, and accelerate breakthroughs on key low-carbon technologies to build up a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient modern energy system and to realize green and low-carbon energy transition of China’s power industry.
Dr. SHU pointed out that clean and low-carbon transition is a common opportunity and challenge facing all countries in the world. It requires more extensive international cooperation and results sharing from scientific and business communities of all countries. He hopes that both China and the UK could further broaden cooperation channels in science and technology, international standardization and jointly carry out researches on major topics, so as to make greater contributions to building a community of life for man and Nature.
