Largest Power Companies of China and the US Jointly Promote CO2 Emission Reduction

China Huaneng Group and AEP Sign Technical Cooperation Agreement on Coal-fired Power Plant CO2 Emission Reduction and Energy Efficiency Improvement

On the afternoon of January 18, U.S. time, China Huaneng Group and AEP signed a technical cooperation agreement on coal-fired power plant CO2 emission reduction and energy efficiency improvement.

Huang Long, Vice President of China Huaneng Group, and Nicholas Akins, President  of AEP, attached their signatures to the agreement. Signing of the agreement got support from the National Energy Administration of the P.R.C and the U.S. Department of Energy. Zhang Guobao, Former Chairman of the National Energy Administration of the P.R.C, and Steven Chu, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy, witnessed signing of the agreement.

According to the agreement, the parties will cooperate in research on coal-fired power plant CO2 emission reduction. The parties agree to carry out feasibility study of 1,500,000t/a CO2 capture project in a 600MW coal-fired power plant under AEP using CO2 capture technology independently developed by China Huaneng Group, and timely promote 1,500,000t/a CO2 capture pilot project. In addition, the parties will cooperate in improving energy efficiency of coal-fire power plants, carry out benchmarking research on their respective coal-fire units of different types, find problems, propose specific measures for energy saving and consumption reduction, and further reduce energy consumption of their respective coal-fired units.

China Huaneng Group and AEP are the largest power companies in China and the US respectively, and are members of CERC's clean coal technology team. As their power sources are both dominated by coal-fired power generation, the two companies jointly face the challenge of energy saving, emission reduction, and fight against climate change. Therefore, they have been proactively promoting technical cooperation and pilot projects in energy saving and emission reduction of coal-fired power plants. They reached the cooperation agreement after several rounds of consultation and signed the agreement during Chinese president Hu Jintao's visit to the US.  

Signing of the cooperation agreement will greatly help China Huaneng Group and AEP to learn advanced technologies and management experiences from each other, and effectively increase technical level of China and the US in energy saving, consumption reduction and CO2 emission reduction of coal-fired power plants. The cooperation also provides opportunity for the CO2 capture technology independently developed by China Huaneng Group to enter the US and the international energy market. It is of great significance for improving the influence of our independently developed technologies in international energy field.
