Unveiling Ceremony for Landmark Unit Enabling the Installed Hydropower Capacity of China to Exceed 200 GW

Liu Qi, Luo Zhengfu, Sun Yucai and Cao Peixi Jointly unveil the plate On August 25, the National Energy Administration (“NEA”), China Electricity Council, China Huaneng Group, the Development and Reform Committee and the Energy Administration of Yunnan Province held the “Opening Ceremony for the Landmark Unit Enabling the Installed Hydropower Capacity of China to Exceed 200 GW” at Huaneng Xiaowan Hydropower Station. Present at the ceremony were nearly 300 distinguished guests from the competent ministries and commissions, the People’s Government of Yunnan Province, China Power Industry Association and related enterprises, who witnessed the glorious moment in the hydropower development history of China together with hundreds of constructors of the station.

In the warm and festive atmosphere, Liu Qi, Deputy Director of NEA, Luo Zhengfu, member of theStanding Committee of the Party Committee and Executive Deputy Governor of Yunnan Province, Sun Yucai, Secretary of the Party Group and Executive Vice Chairman of China Electricity Council, and Cao Peixi, President of China Huaneng Group attended the ceremony and jointly unveiled unit 4 of the station,which became the landmark unit that brought the national installed hydropower capacity over the threshold of 200 GW.

Huaneng Xiaowan Hydropower Station is a national key project and also a milestone project of Yunnan Province in implementing the national strategies for the large-scale development of the western regions and west-east power transmission. It is also an engineering project involving the largest single-project investment in the history of the province, with a guaranteed annual out put of 19 billion KW and a total reservoir capacity of 14.9 billion m3. Functioning primarily for power generation, the project also produces comprehensive utilization benefits in flood control, irrigation, sand barring and navigation. As a leading power station in the middle and lower segments of Lancang River, it will greatly improve the regulation performance of the cluster of hydropower stations in Yunnan and turn around the undesirable situation of overcapacity in the high water period and under capacity in the low water period that has existed for long in the power sector of Yunnan. Unit 1 was put into operation on September 25, 2009, while unit 2 and 3 were put into commercial operation on November 15 and December 15 respectively, with unit 3 being named the landmark unit enabling the installed capacity of China Huaneng Group to exceed 100 GW. Unit 4 was put into operation on May 9, 2010 to become the landmark unit enabling the installed hydropower capacity of China to exceed 200 GW. The last unit was put into operation on August 22.
