Largest Hydropower BOT Project Built by China in a Foreign Country
On May 16, 2009, a completion ceremony was held for Shweli Cascade-I Hydropower Station in Myanmar, the largest hydropower BOT project built by China in a foreign country.
The completion and operation of the project mark one more major achievement made by China Huaneng Group in implementing the “going out” strategy and set an example for promoting the electric power cooperation in Greater Mekong subregion. The station is located on the main stream of Shweli, close to China-Myanmar border in the territory of Shan State in north Myanmar, with a total installed capacity of 600MW and a designed annual output of 4 billion KWh. The project is now the largest hydropower BOT project of China in Myanmar and also the largest of its kind ever built and put into operation in Myanmar. It is developed, operated and managed in the form of BOT (build—operate—transfer) by Yunnan United Power Development Co., Ltd., which is controlled by Huaneng Lancang River Hydropower Co.,
Ltd. of China Huaneng Group. The construction of the project set a number of new records in the hydropower construction at home and abroad: only 20 months elapsed from river damming to the operation of the first unit on September 5, 2008; only 8 months used from the production of the first unitt to that of the last; zero incident safety.
