China Energy Practices the ‘Two Mountains’ Theory to Promote Green Development

As the spring breeze once again caresses flowers and trees, China Energy begins a new journey on the path of green development. Many of its subsidiaries are committed to implementing the concept “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets,” also known as “Two Mountains” theory which was raised by President Xi Jinping, to continue its efforts to achieve clean, low-carbon and sustainable development.

Some 800 employees of Zhungeer Energy Resources Co., Ltd. under the group participated in the voluntary tree-planting campaign and planted a total of 10,000 saplings of camphor pine in batches, as part of the company’s efforts of developing green mining areas that strike a balance between environmental protection and enterprise development. As of the end of 2019, the company had invested 1.5 billion yuan in total in reclamation and afforestation and completed reclamation of more than 2,400 hectares of its mining areas, achieving a 100-percent reclamation rate and increasing the vegetation coverage from 25 to 80 percent. The company has been cited among “Chinese Top 400 Units in Afforestation” and named a “National Demonstration Area of Ecological and Environmental Construction for Soil and Water Conservation,” and its Heidaigou and Haerwusu open pit coal mines have been selected into the National Green Mines List.

Shengli Energy Co., Ltd., another subsidiary of China Energy, has been actively constructing a grassland-based demonstration area that features industrial, cultural and tourism functions and integrates large-scale coal-based power development, environmental management and tourism. Since the beginning of 2020, the company has planted 2,916 trees, 2,159 shrubs, 850 square meters of hedge and more than 60,000 square meters of grass in the surroundings of the Logistics Center, reclaimed 100,000 square meters of degraded land and laid 2.6 kilometers of green pipelines at the northern waste dump, and sprayed 24,000 square meters of soil on some of the slopes at the southern waste dump, unprecedented in the local area. The company’s open-pit mine was recently named on the National Green Mines List.

Guodian Electric Power Company combines efforts of tree planting and poverty alleviation. The poverty alleviation task force of its Ningxia branch purchased 75 pear seedlings as courtyard fruit trees and established “love economic orchards” with 15 registered poverty-stricken households to help them increase income. The “Shenhua 10,000-mu Forests” campaign launched by Yulin Shenhua Energy Co., Ltd. in 2010 has completed over 4,500 mu, with more than 4,000 trees planted and 750 participants involved. In addition, Baotou Energy Company carried out a voluntary tree planting campaign, planting a total of 4,500 red raspberries and camphor pines. Wuhai Energy Company planted 650 Xinjiang poplars in the ecological garden of its Huangbaici coal mine. Xuzhou Power Plant of Guohua Electric Power Company planted more than 200 willow trees in the ash field.
