Since March 2020, enterprises in Bohai New Area, where Cangdong Power Plant of Beijing Guohua Electric Power Corporation, a subsidiary of China Energy Investment Corporation, is located, have begun to gradually resume production and operations. Leveraging its unique advantages in “futuristic technology” for purifying and desalinating seawater and under the prerequisite of paying equal attention to epidemic control and production resumption, Cangdong Power Plant is actively performing its social responsibility by providing freshwater for enterprises that have resumed operations in Bohai New Area. In March alone, it supplied 562,000 tons of desalinated seawater to neighboring enterprises.

Since its establishment, Cangdong Power Plant has adhered to a strategy of “zero exploitation of freshwater.” In 2006, the power plant imported two LT-MED seawater desalination devices with daily processing capacity of 10,000 tons from abroad to meet its own demand for water. Meanwhile, it began to independently develop 10,000-ton LT-MED seawater desalination equipment. In December 2008, the Phase II of its domestically developed seawater desalination facility officially began operation, which has a capacity of desalinating 12,500 tons of seawater per day. Besides meeting its own demand, the power plant began to supply certain amounts of water to other enterprises. With the advancement of the technology, Cangdong Power Plant cooperated with the local government in 2011 to begin supplying desalinated seawater to enterprises in the locality. Since then, it has undertaken the responsibility of providing high-quality desalinated seawater to boost regional economic development. In 2012, the power plant’s seawater desalination project with a daily capacity of 25,000 tons was listed among the third batch of “national demonstration projects for resource conservation and environmental protection of the year,” making it a major demonstration project for promoting the development of China’s seawater desalination industry.

At present, Cangdong Power Plant annually provides more than 10 million tons of high-quality desalinated seawater for 30 enterprises in the locality. By the end of March 2020, it has desalinated 115 million tons of seawater, and supplied more than 63 million tons of desalinated seawater to enterprises in fields like biopharmaceuticals, petroleum chemicals, and electricity power. As a major water supplier for various enterprises in the area, it has played a key role in boosting work resumption of those enterprises through guaranteeing freshwater supply.
