China Energy Ningxia Power’s 2 GW Photovoltaic Project Breaks Ground

The groundbreaking ceremony of the 2 GW photovoltaic project under China Energy Ningxia Power Co., Ltd., a national large-scale photovoltaic base, was simultaneously held in Ningxia and Beijing via video link on October 20.

The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is an important energy base in China. The photovoltaic project is a landmark project carried out by China Energy in Ningxia to promote green, low-carbon development. It is also a new milestone for Ningxia to promote green development, adjust power structure, and deepen cooperation between the local government and a centrally administered state-owned enterprise. The project is among the first batch of wind and photovoltaic bases with installation capacity totaling 100 GW announced at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15). It is the largest-ever new energy project with the greatest amount of investment in Ningxia.

After the project is put into operation, it is estimated to generate 3.15 billion kWh of electricity each year, with an annual output of 820 million yuan, and pay tax of 90 million yuan. It will save 960,000 tons of standard coal and reduce CO2 emissions by 2.62 million tons per year, and provide green energy for the west-to-east power transmission project.

The project takes advantage of the abundant sunshine of the Ningxia Ningdong Energy Base and builds photovoltaic stations in coal mine reserve areas, goafs, subsidence areas, and wasteland. This method is conducive to enhancing land water conservation and plant growth and helping ecological improvement and desertification control in mining areas.
