China’s First Solar-Coal Coupling Flywheel Energy Storage Project Breaks Ground at Ningxia Power

The 22MW/4.5MWH solar-coal coupling flywheel energy storage project, launched by China Energy Ningxia Power (Lingwu) Co., Ltd., broke ground on the morning of November 10. As China’s first full-capacity flywheel energy storage project featuring solar-coal integrated frequency adjustment as well as the world’s biggest single flywheel energy storage project with the largest single power, it will break the technical bottleneck in the development and utilization of 500KW single flywheels.

The company has long been committed to accelerating the energy-saving upgrade and flexible transformation of its coal-fired generation units and exploring the coupling of multiple energy technologies, in order to further advance flexible, low-carbon and reliable development. While ensuring heat and electricity integrated supply, these efforts are also of great significance for enhancing the flexibility and economic returns of generation units. The 22MW/4.5MWH flywheel energy storage project adopts an emerging electricity storage technology, which is characterized by great eco-friendliness, high in-depth power charging/discharging capacity, remarkable frequency-adjusting capacity, wide temperature range, low cost, zero attenuation, zero maintenance, high precision, etc. After the project is put into operation, it will greatly increase coal-fired generation units’ frequency-modulating performance, provide electricity supplementary services, and support the safe and stable operations of large-scale grids, so as to offer key technical support for clean, efficient integrated use of coal and new energy technology absorption in China. It will generate annual revenues of 37.98 million yuan in terms of primary frequency modulation for grid supplementary service.
