NICE’s Controlled Cross-linked Polyethylene Technology Wins a Silver Award of China Patent Award

The State Intellectual Property Office recently announced the list of winners of the 22nd China Patent Award, and the patent “a type of cross-linked polyethylene composition with improved processing performance” from the National Institute of Clean-and-Low-Carbon Energy (NICE) under China Energy won a silver award, the second time NICE has earned the honor.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the structural contradictions in the field of energy and basic petrochemical materials remain prominent globally. In 2019, China’s apparent consumption volume of polyolefin materials reached as high as 34 million tons, of which 48 percent of high-end differentiated materials were imported. The technology for materials used in special areas were particularly monopolized by foreign companies. NICE’s patented technology is a series of functional rotational plastic cross-linked materials, which can be used for lightweight special storage and transportation equipment, integrated construction machinery fuel tanks, intelligent hazardous chemical storage and transportation equipment, intelligent marine equipment, and clean new energy equipment, just to name a few. The high-performance, differentiated technology breaks the monopoly of foreign companies and is of great significance to the development of high-end differentiated polyolefin material technology in China. It has a promising application prospect.

NICE’s intellectual property (IP) team collaborated with R&D team to devise a sound IP protection strategy for the research of the controlled cross-linked polyethylene technology. Through analyzing, decoding, constructing and optimizing technical solutions, they built a multi-dimensional and multi-level protection network for material formulation, manufacturing technics, and product design. So far, the technology has filed two PCT international applications and obtained two foreign patents and 50-plus Chinese invention patents, which lay a solid foundation for the commercialization and promotion of the technology. The technology has been commercialized through the establishment of Shenhua (Beijing) New Materials Technology Co., Ltd. and the company’s business turnover has doubled year after year.

High value-added coal chemical products independently developed by NICE are exported to Uzbekistan and Brazil.
