Wudongde hydropower plant, owned by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), has generated over 1 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) electricity by July 15 after its first batch of power units was put into operation on June 29, supplying green energy to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
As a major component of China’s West-to-East Power Transmission Initiative, Wudongde will install 12 units of 850 MW power generators, of which four have already been commissioned.
The annual capacity of the hydropower plant is able to support power needs of Guangzhou for almost five months. In line with the goals of the West-to-East Power Transmission Initiative, Wudongde will alleviate the strain on power supply in the Greater Bay Area and optimize its energy mix, driving high-quality social and economic development in the region.
The clean energy generated by the hydropower plant will also replace a massive amount of fossil fuel, saving 12.2 million tons of standard coal and reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide by 30.5 million tons and 104,000 tons every year respectively, which are equivalent to planting 85,000 hectares of broad-leaved forests.
