The ocean, a major repository for global biodiversity, accounts for more than 90% of the earth’s habitat and has about 250,000 known species. Many more species are yet to be discovered there, with at least two-thirds of marine species unidentified.
In a bid to protect marine life, WindMW GmbH, a subsidiary of China Three Gorges International Corporation (CTGI), regularly assesses the environment where its offshore wind power projects are located to avoid potential impact on marine species and their habitat. It monitors the seabed, benthos, fish, birds, and marine mammals, underwater noise, etc.
According to the monitoring results of the location of Meerwind offshore wind farm in recent years, the population of benthos, including mammals, fish, shellfish and algae, has increased. The ecological environment has been maintained in a good condition, with sound water, soil and water quality.
Meerwind wind farm sampled 773kg of 26 fish species in 2017, and the assessment results were positive
