Three Gorges Dam Increases Discharge to Prevent Traffic Congestion in the Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River

With an aim of relieving traffic in the lower reaches of the Three Gorges right before Chinese New Year, the water level of Miaozui (downstream Gezhouba Dam) was controlled to be no less than 40 meters to prevent traffic congestion at the ship locks and ensure a smooth upstream traffic.

After coordinating with the local grids based on water forecasting while taking into account the water level fluctuation of key reservoirs and discharge volumes, Three Gorges Dispatch & Communication Center adopted the peak reduction measure at the Three Gorges Dam and countermeasures at the Gezhouba Dam for the power generation plan of the cascade power plants to ensure orderly traffic in during Chinese New Year.
