China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) plans to pour up to RMB100 billion next year in programs aimed at protecting the Yangtze River, the latest step the country’s biggest hydropower operator takes in environmental protection area.As part of its initiatives to drive Yangtze River protection, CTG has set up several platforms such as Yangtze Ecology & Environment Co., Ltd., China Yangtze River Green Development Investment Fund, Special Fund for Ecological & Environmental Protection of Yangtze River, and Yangtze River Eco-environmental Protection Industry Alliance.
It is also preparing to launch National Engineering &Research Center for Yangtze River Ecological Environment. CTG is trailblazing a model called capital plus to engage and leverage social capital in the Yangtze River protection cause.
Other market entities and local governments along the Yangtze River could draw on CTG’s expertise and best practices gained in its partnership with local governments as they implement similar initiatives to protect the river.
CTG has so far started building or funded 95 urban sewage treatment plants, with total investment of RMB43.8 billion. Projects in four pilot cities, including Yichang, Yueyang, Jiujiang and Wuhu, as well as in Wuwei County and Zigui County are already underway.
