Wudongdong hydropower station, owned by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), commissioned its third power unit on July 11, achieving another significant milestone after the successful commissioning of its first two units less than two week ago.
After a 72-hour trial operation, the station successfully connected its No.8 power unit to the China Southern Power Grid, following the successful commissioning of plant’s first two power generators on June 29.
The Wudongdong hydropower station is a major component of the West-to-East Power Transmission Initiative.Upon its scheduled completion in July 2021, the station will become the fourth-largest hydropower plant in China and the seventh-largest in the world.
The project installs 12 power units with a total capacity of 850,000 kW, making it the largest existing hydro turbine generator set in the world. The station will boast a total installed capacity of 10.2 million kW as well as an average annual generating capacity of 38.91 billion kWh.
