In mid-June, Three Gorges Reservoir tested ecological operations for a second time this year. The test not only takes account of inflow changes in the upper reaches, but also ensures water temperature of the lower reaches falls within the most suitable range for the breeding of four species of Chinese carp - Black Carp, Bighead, Grass Carp, and Silver Carp.
It is reported that the test of ecological operation begins from June 17, which will continuously increase the outflow of three gorges reservoir to form the water-rising process in the lower reaches of Three Gorges so as to facilitate the breeding of the four species of Chinese carp. On June 17-19, the Reservoir set the average daily outflow at 11,000m3/s, 12,500m3/s and 14,300m3/s respectively, with an average daily increase of 1,000-1,500m3/s. The consequent rise of water level in the lower reaches is supposedly good for fish breeding. Such controlled rise is planned to last another two days or so; the specific duration is to be determined by runoff changes. The effect of ecological operations will be promptly evaluated by fish breeding results simultaneously measured at various monitoring sections.
