China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) has announced that its six cascade hydropower plants along the main stream of the Yangtze River put all of their 98 power units into operation on July 28 as part of its efforts to meet the peak demand in the summer.
The total power generated from the cascade hydropower plants – Three Gorges, Gezhouba, Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Wudongde and Baihetan – reached 52.58 GW on the day, setting a record.
The continued rise in temperature in July pushed up electricity demand across the nation. On July 26, the grid in Guangzhou, the capital city of South China’s Guangdong province, exceeded 20 million kilowatts in power load for the first time.
To meet peak demand, CTG has put all 98 power units at the six cascade power stations into operation for the first time, generating 1.1 billion kWh of electricity on the day, greatly easing the short power supply. CTG’s hydropower stations not only guard the Yangtze River but also give a push to the country’s low-carbon development.
