Shanghai Astronomy Museum, the world's largest astronomy museum, opened its door to the first visitors on July 18. Spanning 38,000 square meters of space, the museum, jointly designed and built by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) and Shanghai Construction Group, is dedicated to the universe 90 billion light years across, featuring diverse interactive experiments and themed exhibitions. It has gained popularity among the young generation after it’s open.
Located in Shanghai Lin-Gang Special Area, the museum is a key infrastructure for popular science in the city and also an important initiative by Shanghai to build itself into a technology and innovation hub.
A consortium consisting of Shanghai Investigation, Design and Research Institute Co., a design arm of CTG and Shanghai Construction Group won the bid for Shanghai Astronomy Museum in December 2019.
The project, which features unique and complicated spatial relations and the uncertainties and special requirements in the development of the exhibits, posed a challenge to the team. After over 600 days of dedicated work, the project was successfully completed, bringing into the world a stunning, timeless science museum.
