China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) announced that its researchers have put satellite tags on 16 large-size "second-generation" Chinese sturgeons to be released into the wild from March 22 to 24 as part of the efforts to gather information about their marine habitats.

The Chinese Sturgeon Research Institute, also known as the Conservation Center for Rare Fish in the Yangtze River, owned by CTG, said the data and information garnered from their satellite tags will be used to study the marine inhabitation history of Chinese sturgeons.

The sturgeons with satellite tags are the bigger ones carefully selected from the 10,000 sturgeons the institute has planned to release. All of them have a length of over 1.5 meters, a weight of over 50 kilograms, and an age of over 10 years.

Known as "aquatic panda”, the Chinese sturgeon is one of the first-class protected animals in China as well as a "living fossil". As the flagship species of the Yangtze River, its survival reflects to a certain extent the conditions of the water eco-environment.

According to statistics, since its first release in 1984, CTG has carried out 63 releases of Chinese sturgeons into the Yangtze River, totaling more than 5.03 million, including more than 28,000 of the second generation. Those releases are instrumental in replenishing the population resources of Chinese sturgeons and ensuring their sustainable reproduction.
