Nam Lik Power Plant, a hydropower project in Laos owned by China International Water & Electric Corp. (CWE), a subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), recently held its annual fish breeding and releasing event, part of CTG’s ecological initiatives in the Southeastern Asian nation.
A total of 50,000 tilapia, grass carp, silver carp and silver swordfish fish fry were released in the low reaches of the Nam Lik dam during the event, which saw participation from the local government, teachers, students, representatives of citizens, reporters, employees of Nam Lik 1-2 Power Plant and young volunteers. The release is aimed to purify the river and improve eco-conservation in the region.
The event is expected to increase the number of fish living in the basin and replenish fishery resources, said Mr. Boumma Thamavong, County Mayor of Feuang County. He also urged local residents to join in the efforts of protecting the fish fry. Specialists from relevant government departments have been tasked with following up on the effects of the initiative and the status of the river’s fishery resources.
Nam Lik Power Plant has long been committed to the cause of eco-environment protection in the basin through its actions, having held the event for nine consecutive years. It hopes the released fish fry will make a positive impact on improving the water quality of the river.
