An Air China charted plane airlifted a total of 118 professional technicians and managers for Karot hydropower project from the Chinese city of Chengdu to Islamabad in Pakistan.
China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), the developer of the project, said these technicians will be assigned to the frontline of the Karot dam, where they will aid in the project’s construction and power production preparation, as its construction has entered a key period.
To ensure the timely completion and commissioning of the project, CTG plans to organize another two groups of constructors to travel to the station in the near future.
Karot hydropower project is one of the priority projects of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It’s also the fourth of five planned cascade hydropower stations planned on the Jhelum River in Pakistan. The project with an installed capacity of 720 megawatt will solve the power supply bottleneck in Pakistan and provide sustainable and stable energy support.
Once completed, the project will annually produce some 3.2 billion kilowatt-hours of clean power. In addition to power generation, it will help with flood prevention and sediment control, and improve downstream and reservoir areas’ transport services. The project is expected to create more than 2,000 new jobs, and will spur coordinated and upgraded development in related sectors.
To help Pakistan contain COVID-19, so far CTG has donated two batches of supplies, which included 750,000 surgical masks, ventilators and protection gowns.
