China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) has completed the construction of all underground facilities at its Baihetan hydropower station on October 5, the latest milestone at the the world’s largest hydropower station under construction.
Located inside the mountains along the Jinsha River, the riverside underground facilities of Baihetan hydropower station are currently the largest of their kind in the world, designed to house 16 units of 1-GW hydro generators.
Baihetan also holds the world record for the largest installed capacity of a single unit. With a total installed capacity of 16 GW, Baihetan hydropower station has installed eight proprietary generators, each with a capacity of 1 GW, on the left and right banks respectively.
With the construction of the underground facilities now completed, CTG will fast-track the installation of the generators so that it can achieve the goal of putting the power plant into operation on schedule. Upon completion, Beihetan will be the world’s second-largest power station after the Three Gorges Dam.
