China Three Gorges Renewables (Group) Co. (600905), the alternative energy arm of China Three Gorges Corp. (CTG), announced that it has successfully completed the installation of the world's largest and Asia's first offshore converter station on July 18, in the Huangshayang sea area of Rudong, Jiangsu Province.
The 22,000-ton converter station boasts the world's largest capacity, highest voltage class and largest volume. The gigantic device has an area nearly as large as a standard soccer field and a height that is equivalent to a 15-floor residential building.
It is tasked with pooling and distributing the 1.1 million kW of electricity, produced by CTG's Rudong H6 and H10 projects (800,000 kW in total) and China General Nuclear Power Corporation's Rudong H8 project (300,000 kW). The facility can effectively address the challenges of large capacity and long-distance power transmission presented by offshore wind farms.
Once completed and put into operation, the project will generate 2.4 billion kWh of electricity annually, which is enough to power about 1 million households annually. Compared with coal-fired power plants with the same capacity, the wind farm can save about 740,000 tons of standard coal and reduce about 1.83 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, helping China achieve the goal of reaching peak emissions and carbon neutrality.
