Portuguese Ambassador to China emphasizes united efforts to fight against the virus

Since declaring a national state of emergency for the first time in history on March 18 due to the COVID-19 virus, Portugal has extended it twice to May 2.

To aid Portugal in its fight against COVID-19, China Three Gorges Corp (CTG) and Energias de Portugal (EDP) have jointly donated a batch of medical supplies to the country in a recent ceremony held at the Portuguese Embassy in China.

“To help Portugal fight the epidemic, many Chinese companies, social groups, and students abroad have volunteered to donate medical supplies to our country,” said Jose Agusto Duarte, Portuguese Ambassador to China. “But the first call I received was from CTG and EDP. We did not make a request, but CTG offered to help and we will always remember it.”

CTG and EDP’s donations have now arrived in Lisbon. The supplies, which contains 5.2 tons of medical equipment including ventilators and monitors, were already distributed by the Portuguese Ministry of Health to medical institutions on the frontlines of the battle against COVID-19, providing strong protection for local healthcare workers.

CTG’s relationship with Portugal dates back to late 2011 when the company became the largest shareholder and strategic partner of EDP, the biggest company in the country.

After almost a decade of cooperation, CTG and EDP have forged an increasingly close partnership, sharing interests and responsibilities in building a clean future.

Against backdrop of global pandemic, Duarte pointed out that as the pandemic spreads, countries need to put all efforts in the battle against the virus.

“We are all interconnected, and it’s going to take all of us working together to overcome this challenge,” he said.
