The Three Gorges cascade reservoir, located in the lower Jinsha River, built and operated by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) , is a significant project for flood control and drought relief in the Yangtze River basin as well as comprehensive utilization of water resources.
The project serves as a vital part in the joint operation of reservoirs in the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River, including Xiluodu and Xiangjiaba hydropower stations.
The Xiluodu Reservoir had discharged water to the planned water level on May 20. The discharging-water process of the Three Gorges Reservoir for the flood season lasted for 186 days, starting from December 5 last year. It reached at the flood limit water level of 145 meters on June 8, 2 days ahead of the schedule to free up flood storage capacity.
The completion of the process has laid a solid foundation for the cascade reservoirs with the Three Gorges Project as the backbone to give full play to their role in flood control, guaranteeing the safety of people's lives and property in the Sichuan section and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
