CTG's Pingtanyuan pumped storage power project starts construction

China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) announced that its subsidiary Hubei Energy Group Co., Ltd., started construction of the Pingtanyuan pumped storage power project in Luotian County on the morning of February 14.

The upper reservoir of Pingtanyuan power station is located in Huanggang City, Hubei Province. The project has an installed capacity of 1.4 million kilowatts, an average hydraulic head of 597 meters, and an annual pumped-storage hydroelectricity of 1.96 billion kWh. It annual output value could reach up to 1 billion yuan. The station is expected to have its first power unit installed and commissioned by 2027, and become fully completed and operational by 2028.

Upon completion, it will generate 1.47 billion kWh of electricity annually. It will undertake the tasks of peak load regulation, valley filling, frequency regulation, phase modulation, power storage, and emergency use for Hubei's power grid system. The project will create remarkable environmental benefits as it can cut coal consumption by about 300,000 tons and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 750,000 tons for Hubei's grid power system per year. Thus, the station will be able to promote the development of local green and low-carbon transformation, fuel the optimization of local energy structure, and enhance local infrastructure.
