On December 11, China saw its first ever floating LiDAR buoys delivered by air from Luxembourg to Xiamen, Fujian. The buoys will provide new solutions in terms of measuring wind conditions for offshore wind farms off the coast of Fujian, which is known for strong winds, big waves, rapid tidal flows and deep water.
A LiDAR buoy is 8m in length and 2.55m in diameter, and weighs 5.8 tons. It measures wind speed from sea level to an altitude of 200m. Data validity is guaranteed as it applies calibrations to the measured data based on wave motions. The buoy is powered by built-in wind turbines, solar panels and diesel engines, and can last an en-tire week in the event of power outage. CTG will use these buoys to gain information quickly on resource conditions, reduce wind measurement costs and adjust its develop-ment plan in a timely manner.
