The Three Gorges region, known as the "green treasury" or "gene bank" of the Yangtze River basin, is home to a large number of rare and unique plants. In 2017, CTG established the Yangtze River Rare Plant Research Institute to maximize the protection of biodiversity in the Three Gorges Reservoir via ex-situ conservation, introduction and breeding and the establishment of a germplasm repository.

The Yangtze River Rare Plant Research Institute is the largest conservation base for rare plants endemic to China’s Three Gorges region. To date, the institute has built eight large-scale sightseeing gardens for rare plants, such as davidiainvolucrata and taxuschinensis, and has 1,006 species of rare plants under protection.

After years of observation and experimentation, the institute has selected more than 10 species of rare plants, such as myricarialaxiflora and adiantum reniforme, and replanted them to their habitats along the Yangtze river.
