Lei Mingshan, Chairman of China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), paid a visit to former chief economist and senior vice president of the World Bank Justin Yifu Lin on November 28, seeking to explore academic exchanges with the Institute of New Structural Economics (INSE) at Peking University where Lin serves as its dean.
During their meeting, Lei briefly introduced the reform and development initiatives at CTG in recent years, and said that CTG needs intellectual support from top national think tanks as the group is in a critical period of transformation.
He expressed hope that Professor Lin and his team can visit the Three Gorges Project to conduct field investigation, learn about the development of CTG in various fields, and launch joint research programs with CTG to enrich the innovative achievements of INSE.
Lin said that new structural economics, which is built on the development experience of China and other developing countries, advocates that developing countries or regions should develop industries with comparative advantages starting from their factor endowment structure to drive the transformation and upgrading of their economic structure as well as economic and social development. He added that theoretical innovations should be combined with practices.
Formerly known as the Center for New Structural Economics at Peking University, INSE is China’s first research institute with the aim of pursuing independent theoretical innovation in social sciences. It was founded in December 2015 by Professor Lin as one of the pioneering top think tanks in China.
