Wudongde hydropower plant, owned by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) and equipped with the world’s large single power generator, said it has generated 20 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) clean electricity as of 10 p.m. April 15 since its first batch of power units was commissioned last June.
The hydropower plant has so far commissioned 8 power units, each with a capacity of 850 MW. It once set a world record of commissioning a total capacity of 3,400 MW within two weeks.
Based on the Kunming's electricity consumption in 2019, the 20 billion kWh clean electricity can power the capital city of Yunnan province for 7 months. The amount of the electricity is equivalent to a reduction of 6.27 million tons of standard coal, cutting emissions of 15.68 million tons of carbon dioxide and 53,000 tons of sulfur dioxide. Based on the projection that 1 kWh electricity produces RMB 13.8 of GDP, the generated electricity contributes about RMB 276 billion to the GDP of China.
Wudongde hydropower plant is a key project of China’s West-to-East Power Transmission initiative. The power plant is on track to be fully operational by July 1 as its last four power units have now entered general assembly phase.
