from:China General Nuclear Power Groupdate:2015-09-29
On September 29, CGN announced on the occasion of arrival of its 21st anniversary of establishment that the accumulated on-grid electricity from clean energy exceeds 700 billion kWh, with equivalent emission reduction of 550 million tons of carbon dioxide, corresponding to planting 1.51 million hectares of forests and covering 7 Shenzhen City. CGN’s spokesman Hu Guangyao introduced that the installed nuclear capacity in operation or under construction of CGN has reached 29.37GW. With the continuous development of CGN and fast-speed strategic layout at international nuclear market, CGN has become a strong competitor in international nuclear power market.
Nuclear Installed Capacity under Construction Accounts for 18.6% in the World
CGN is not only China’s largest nuclear operator, but the largest nuclear constructor around the world. According to Mr Hu, currently CGN has 14 nuclear power units in operation with an installed capacity of 14.92 GW, accounting for 60.5% of the combined nuclear power installed capacity at China mainland, and the safe operation performance still maintains in the world's advanced level. Since 2015, Unit 2 of Yangjiang NPP, Unit 3 of Ningde NPP and Unit 3 of Hongyanhe NPP were successively put into or available for commercial operation.
Meanwhile, CGN steadily promotes the construction nuclear power projects. On March 10, 2015, the National Development and Reform Commission approved the construction of Units 5,6 of Hongyanhe NPP and the two units started construction on March 29, July 24 respectively. So far, CGN has 6 nuclear power bases in operation or under construction, including 12 units under construction with an installed capacity of 14.45 GW, accounting for 52.4% and 18.6% of total installed capacity under construction of China mainland and around the world.
In addition, the construction of Fangchenggang Phase Ⅱ nuclear project, the demonstration project of HPR 1000 and the reference station for planned nuclear project in the UK, is expected to be started within this year. This would lay a critical foundation for “going global” of equipment manufacturing and other industries driven by independent technology.
CGN’s HPR1000 Expected to Land in UK
With the promotion of “One Belt, One Road” initiative, “going global” of nuclear power has risen to be a national policy, and Chinese government gives high hopes to the export of nuclear power technology and equipment manufacturing . Hu Guangyao said that CGN has begun to explore overseas market since 2008, and now CGN has become an important force in international nuclear power market competition, making its best to expand the market in United Kingdom, Romania, Kenya, South Africa, Thailand, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, etc.
Recently, with the successive visits of the UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and Chancellor of Energy and Climate Change Amber Rudd to China, the involvement of Chinese enterprise consortium led by CGN in UK nuclear power projects received unprecedented attention. Hu Guangyao stated that in June 2015, the “Joint Statement On Civil Nuclear Power Cooperation” was signed between Chinese and French governments in Paris. The statement made it clear that the Chinese enterprise consortium led by CGN would cooperate with French companies for the three planned projects in the UK, and the Chinese consortium will support and participate in Hinckley Point C project, as well as site preparation of Sizewell C project. In addition, EDF would give some support the Chinese consortium to implement another nuclear power project in the UK, and help to conduct adaptive design revise based on HPR1000 to satisfy the safety requirements of the UK’s nuclear regulator and make it more competitive.
Meanwhile, on September 7, 2105, CGN and Kenya signed the “Memorandum of Understanding on Nuclear Development Cooperation”, making that CGN has taken the first step toward the nuclear power development in Kenya. It is reported that Kenya is currently in the early stage of industrial transformation with large electricity demand. According to its plan, by 2030, the total electric power installed capacity of Kenya will increase to 19GW from the current 2.2 GW, while the scales of conventional energy sources in the country can be developed (hydro and geothermal energy) are both small. Therefore, Kenya wants to develop the energy project of medium and large scale that can be built in short time.
According to Mr Hu Guangyao, presently, CGN has become the “qualified investor” for Romania’s Cernavoda nuclear power project, and conducted in-depth communication and exchange on nuclear and clean energies with energy authorities and related enterprises of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Kazakhstan and other countries for actively participating in the global nuclear power market.
CGN Establishes four Business Segments in the Embryonic Period of A State-Owned Asset Operation Corporation
Mr.Hu Guangyao remarked that in addition to nuclear power, CGN has been committed to the co-development strategy of nuclear power and non-nuclear clean energies, actively promoting the development of wind power, hydropower, solar energy, gas and other non-nuclear clean energy projects. By the end of this August, the installed capacity of non-nuclear clean energies of CGN in operation or under construction reached 12.49 GW, covering 29 provinces and achieving the synchronous development of scale and benefits, which include 7.4 GW of wind power in operation, 700 MW of solar energy in operation and the equity installed capacity of hydropower of 5.26 GW. Meanwhile, CGN also actively promote the “going global” of non-nuclear clean energies. At present, the total installed capacity abroad is surpassed 3000 MW, mainly in South Korea, Britain, France, Australia, Singapore, etc.
In addition, according to the new situation of integration of industry-finance capital (IIFC), CGN established CGN Capital Holdings Limited in 2015 to accelerate the financial business layout with the business scope covers funds management, capital fund, financial leasing, insurance, Internet finance, etc. So far, CGN has officially formed four major business segments of nuclear power, new energy, nuclear fuel and financial and integrated services, and built three listed platforms including CGN Power(nuclear),CGN Meiya (non-nuclear New Energy) and CGN Mining (nuclear fuel) in Hong Kong, which not only laid the foundation for future development, but also promoted the establishment of a state-owned asset operation company, and improved the modern enterprise management system.
