The hoisting of dome for unit 5 was completed on April 12 in Dalian city, Liaoning province, marking the entry of next crucial step for the installation of the phase II of Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), the largest power project in Northeast China.
The project is led by China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) in two phases consisting of six units, and is the first NPP in Northeast China.
The steel dome of unit 5 is 37 meters in diameter and weighs more than 140 tons. As the roof of a nuclear reactor building, it means that workers are now able to conduct overall equipment installation in the core area for nuclear fission.
Construction of unit 5 and unit 6 of phase II began in 2015, and are expected to be completed and put into operation in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
The two units use ACPR1000 technology, an improved technical solution based on the phase I project that satisfies China's latest nuclear safety requirements.
Upon completion of phase II of the project, the two units, together with current four units for phase I, will serve as engines to produce electricity of 45 TWh a year, 1.5 times more than the annual electricity consumption of Dalian city.
