NEA Approved Fangchenggang Phase-II to Adopt Hualong-1

     Recently, the National Energy Administration (NEA) issued a reply to the request of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region development and reform commission and China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN), approving two Units of Fangchenggang Phase-II NPP (Hongsha Project) to adopt Hualong-1 technical scheme for demonstration.

Hualong-1 is a Gen-III reactor model up to the highest international safety standards with full combination of great efforts in advanced Gen-III nuclear power concepts on the basis of over 30 years of CNNC’s and CGNPC’s practices in nuclear power research, design, manufacturing, construction and operation. As the design innovation, Hualong-1 adopts a safety design philosophy of “combination of active and passive features” with an 177-fuel assembly core, three physically separated safety series, single-reactor layout and double containments, with full implementation of the “defense in depth” design principle and establishment of perfect severe accident prevention and mitigation measures, etc. In August 2014, Hualong-1 which fully owns the self-reliant intellectual property rights, passed national review jointly organized by National Energy Administration (NEA) and National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA), of which the safety and performance indicators have reached the international advanced level in Gen-III nuclear power technologies.

Situated in coastal Fangchenggang City in Beibu Wan of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Fangchenggang NPP, the first nuclear power project in our country constructed in the western regions and ethnic minority areas, is planned with six 1000MWe class PWR units, construction was started for two units of phase-I on July 30, 2010.
