On November 4, the chemical chain mineralization-based carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) research and demonstration project in the Datong branch of GD Power Development Co., Ltd. under CHN Energy, the first of its kind in China, kicked off coordinated system debugging and began to produce calcium carbonate pulp.
The project adopted high-efficiency CCUS and long-term carbon fixation technologies and used ammonium chloride to dissolve calcium in acetylene sludge, a kind of industrial waste and absorb carbon dioxide in fume, and then produce green calcium carbonate and desulfurized calcium carbonate pulp with commercial value through several steps including sediment, filtration, purification, press filtration and stoving. This enabled coal-fired power plants to achieve long-term stable CCUS and full application in the industry and solve problems such as low commercial value of traditional mineralization technology and inability in large-scale industrialized use, which marks a significant technological innovation and advancement.
When completed, the project will be capable of processing 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year and 818 standard cubic meters of fume each hour, consuming 3,000 tons of acetylene sludge and producing 2,300 tons of calcium carbonate annually. It shows advantages such as high efficiency of decarbonization and high accessibility of raw materials, without the need to enhance the concentration of carbon dioxide. Besides, it can achieve long-term stable carbon fixation, be easy to be applied throughout the industrial chain, and create satisfactory economic returns.
